In brief: Mexico

* Mexico’s social security institute (IMSS) has released new figures which show that 356,414 women registered as formal workers in 2017, a new all-time record high figure. According to the IMSS data, the number of formal jobs filled by women last year was 6.4% higher than the 335,000 registered in 2016 and points to increased participation in the formal labour market by women. Last year women represented 37.2% of the total number of workers registered with the IMSS, up from 32.9% in 1997. However, the IMSS figures also show that the gender pay gap remains high, with female workers on average earning 12.3% less than their male counterparts.
