* The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an NGO, has called on the Brazilian authorities to investigate the murders of journalists Jefferson Puerza Lopes and Ueliton Bayer Brizon and to bring the perpetrators to justice. Lopes was gunned down on 17 January at his home in the violent state of Goiás. He was the second journalist to die in the space of two days following the murder of Brizon, who was shot in the Amazonian state of Rodônia while driving to work. The incidents serve as “a stark reminder of the dangers Brazilian reporters face in rural areas,” said CPJ deputy executive director Robert Mahony from the CPJ’s headquarters in New York City.
