Uruguay: Thousands of people took part in a protest march and sector-congress organised by independent agricultural producers - those not affiliated to any sector organisation and dubbed ‘autoconvocados’- in Uruguay’s central Durazno department. The aim of the mobilisation was to press the autoconvocados’ demands for increased government assistance for agricultural producers. During the event the organisers drafted a series of specific demands including a reduction in electricity tariffs, the introduction of caps on fuel price increases, new tax benefits for the sector, and for the floating of the peso/US dollar exchange rate so that they can benefit from the relative strength of the dollar. The mass mobilisation increases the pressure on the government led President Tabaré Vázquez to address the autoconvocados’ demands.
