Humberto de la Calle was elected as the presidential candidate for the Partido Liberal (PL) on 19 November to contest next May’s elections. De la Calle shot back to prominence, after years in the political wilderness, with his role as chief negotiator of the peace process with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) in Cuba. In the eyes of the Colombian public he symbolises the peace accord struck between the government led by President Juan Manuel Santos and the Farc.
