The left-wing Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) successfully
retained the governorship of Guerrero on 30 January, beating the centrist
Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI). The electoral result dealt an
important blow to the political ambitions of the opposition PRI that may well
set the tone for the next gubernatorial state elections this year and more
importantly next year's Estado and presidential elections. The PRD's success is
a small victory for the ruling right-wing Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) as its
traditional opponent failed to capture the state. Although the PAN did not forge
an alliance with the PRD and the other left-wing parties in Guerrero, the PAN
leadership certainly celebrated the victory, which it hailed as a success that
may be repeated in the future - an allusion to the possibility of collaborating
with the PRD in upcoming elections. End of preview - This article contains approximately 1381 words.
