ARGENTINA: Inflation, what inflation?

“It is not the government that is putting up prices." These were the words of the economy minister, Amado Boudou, last week. Boudou denied that inflation was a problem in Argentina, insisting instead that “some business or trade sectors" were to blame for a “wide disparity of prices". He then went on to advise consumers to shop around for the best offers. Ricardo Alfonsín, one of the favourites to win the presidential nomination for the opposition Unión Cívica Radical (UCR), said Boudou was making a joke in very poor taste. He accused Boudou of provocation and said it beggared belief that the government would not accept that inflation was “a state problem" that was jeopardising Argentina's future.
