“It is not the government that is putting up prices." These were the
words of the economy minister, Amado Boudou, last week. Boudou denied that
inflation was a problem in Argentina, insisting instead that “some business or
trade sectors" were to blame for a “wide disparity of prices". He then went on
to advise consumers to shop around for the best offers. Ricardo Alfonsín, one of
the favourites to win the presidential nomination for the opposition Unión
Cívica Radical (UCR), said Boudou was making a joke in very poor taste. He
accused Boudou of provocation and said it beggared belief that the government
would not accept that inflation was “a state problem" that was jeopardising
