Raúl Sendic has become the first vice-president in Uruguay’s history to resign from the post. Congress officially accepted Sendic’s resignation on 13 September. President Tabaré Vázquez sought to downplay the significance of Sendic’s resignation, while the political opposition crowed that his government was in crisis. When the dust settles, however, it is the ruling left-wing coalition Frente Amplio (FA) and not the opposition which should benefit from Sendic’s departure. Lucía Topolansky, the wife of former president José Mujica (2010-2015), will replace Sendic as vice-president on 18 September, becoming in the process Uruguay’s first female to hold the post.End of preview - This article contains approximately 591 words.
