Peru: The education minister, Marilú Martens, has come closer to an agreement with unions to put an end to a teachers’ strike over pay and working conditions which has been ongoing since June. During a meeting with various protest organisers and union leaders, Martens agreed the government would raise teachers’ salaries from the current level of PEN2,000 (US$615), from PEN1,500 (US$460) per month, effective from December 2017. She also agreed to increase spending on education as a percentage of GDP from its current level of 3.7% to 6% by the end of 2021. Another meeting is scheduled for later today.
