* The federal police have arrested the former head of two major state-owned companies, Aldemir Bendine, as part of the long-running ‘Operation Car Wash’ anti-corruption investigation. Bendine, who was seen as a close ally of the impeached former president Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016), is accused of taking R$3m (US$953,196) in bribes from local construction company Odebrecht when he was president of oil firm Petrobras (2015-2016). He is also accused of soliciting a R$17m (US$5.4m) bribe from Odebrecht in 2014 in exchange for agreeing to renegotiate the firm’s debt with the state-run Banco do Brasil when he was the bank’s president (2009-2015). However, Odebrecht refused to pay the solicited bribe. Bendine is the first former Petrobras president to be arrested as part of ‘Operation Car Wash’.
