Bolivia/Chile: Bolivia’s foreign minister, Fernando Huanacuni, has announced that Bolivia and Chile have adopted the agenda for the bilateral border committee meeting due to take place on 25 July in the Bolivian department of Santa Cruz. Huanacuni confirmed that he met his Chilean counterpart, Heraldo Muñoz, at the sidelines of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) heads of state summit held on 21 July in the Argentine city of Mendoza, to which both Huanacuni and Muñoz attended as observers, to settle on details of the agenda of the meeting. The setting of the bilateral border meeting comes after the recent arrest and release of two Chilean Carabineros (military police) officers by the Bolivian authorities, who accused them of illegally entering Bolivian territory, and the arrest in mid-March by the Chilean authorities of of nine Bolivian government officials, who were subsequently charged with smuggling, theft with intimidation, and illegal possession of weapons. The Bolivian officials were released after being handed a US$50,000 fine.
