Argentina: An Argentine federal court has suspended activities at the giant Alumbrera gold and copper mine in the north-western province of Catamarca. The mine is operated by the Anglo-Swiss mining company Glencore, and Canadian firms Goldcorp and Yamana Gold. The court order followed a complaint by local residents of environmental damage by the mine. On-site assessments of pollution will have to be carried out before the suspension is lifted.
