Constitutional court derails peace fast-tracking

“The biggest setback to the peace process so far”. This is how the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) insurgent guerrillas have described the 18 May ruling by Colombia’s constitutional court (CC) that declared inapplicable some of the provisions included in the so-called ‘legislative act for peace’ package of legislative bills designed to facilitate the implementation of the peace deal signed by the Farc and the Colombian government last year. The ruling has sparked concerns about whether the peace deal can be implemented before the end of the current government’s term and the potential election of a government opposed to the peace deal in next year’s general elections.
