Battle of the orators: Lula vs Moro

Brazil’s former president, Lula da Silva (2003-2011), met Sérgio Moro, the federal judge who is leading the major ‘Operation Car Wash’ anti-corruption probe, for the first time on 11 May at the start of what local media have dubbed as the “trial of the century”. Thousands of Lula’s supporters flocked to the southern city of Curitiba in Paraná state, where Moro’s court is based, to hear Lula’s impassioned defence and show him their support by demonstrating outside the court. Thousands of others also demonstrated outside the court expressing support for the ‘Operation Car Wash’ probe, ignoring Moro’s requests for them to stop making a scene and stay at home.
