* The federal environmental protection agency (Profepa) has fined the suspended local chemical firm, Química Central de México, with US$33m (US$1.76m) for its inadequate handling of 300,000 tonnes of chemical waste. The case involving waste material stored at the firm’s facilities in San Francisco del Rincón in central Guanajuato state, led Profepa to order the suspension of all of Química Central’s operations in 2015 and Profepa has said this suspension will remain in place until the waste is appropriately disposed of and all fines paid.
