In brief: Peru, Colombia

Peru: The transport & communications minister and first vice-president, Martín Vizcarra, has announced that the government has decided to cancel the controversial public-private contract awarded to the local consortium Kuntur Wasi to build a new US$520m international airport in Chinchero, Cusco region. The political opposition had long maintained that the contract was detrimental to the state and accused Vizcarra of colluding with Kuntur Wasi. Vizcarra’s announcement came after he appeared before deputies in the opposition-controlled congress to answer questions about the contract on 18 May and he was threatened with censure by congress. Vizcarra said that while the government is still interested in building a new airport at Chinchero, the lack of political consensus over the current contract led to it deciding to cancel it. Kuntur Wasi, meanwhile, has said that it is analysing suing the government over the contract’s cancellation.
