Colombia: Defence Minister Luis Carlos Villegas has announced that Jesús ‘Morrudo’ Medina, the leader of the ‘Frente Primero’ dissident faction of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrillas, was killed in a security forces’ operation carried out in the San Vicente del Caguán area of Caquetá department. Villegas said that the operation was the first of its kind targeting dissident Farc groups who have rejected the peace deal that the guerrilla leadership signed with the Colombian government last year and have refused to adhere to the Farc’s formal demobilisation process. Villegas also announced that the security forces had arrested Jorge Iván ‘Hernán’ Arboleda, one of the suspected leaders of the Clan del Golfo criminal organisation, during a separate operation in Antioquia department. In what Villegas said was another major blow against armed criminal groups in Colombia.
