Chile: Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz has described the decision by the Bolivian government to deploy troops to the shared border as a “delicate action”. Bolivia’s defence minister, Reymi Ferrerira, has said that the government deployed an elite task force to the border to combat contraband. The move comes amid renewed bilateral tensions following Chile’s detention of nine Bolivian officials on a preventative basis since 22 March. The Chilean government accuses the Bolivian officials of attempting to steal a truck carrying contraband inside Chilean territory, 400m from the border.
