To combat crime, societies need effective and efficient criminal justice systems. These can be defined as the combination of institutions required to detect and arrest criminals, hold them in safe and secure prisons, gather evidence, formulate charges, bring the accused to a fair trial with legal representation, and ultimately implement the sentence of the courts.
