Venezuela: Liborio Guarulla, the long-serving governor of Amazonas state, has revealed that he has been banned from holding public office for 15 years by the comptroller general’s office (CGR). A founding member of the leftist opposition Movimiento Progresista de Venezuela (MPV) party, Liborio was a close ally of the late former president, Hugo Chávez (1999-2013), and the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) until he abandoned the Gran Polo Patriótico PSUV-led coalition in 2012. The (unexplained) decision by the CGR has been taken as another attempt by the government led by President Nicolás Maduro to prevent prominent opposition leaders from taking part in next year’s scheduled general elections.
