Significance: The Odebrecht corruption scandal is starting to engulf the government led by President Danilo Medina. This latest demonstration, led by the Comité Nacional de Lucha Contra el Cambio Climático (CNLCC), comes just four days before another social group, Marcha Verde, plans to hold a nationwide march against government corruption and impunity and to demand the expulsion of Odebrecht from the DR. Marcha Verde shot to prominence in January when it gathered 300,000 signatures demanding the creation of a commission of independent prosecutors, accompanied by the United Nations, to investigate Odebrecht-related corruption in the country. Marcha Verde has stayed very active since and is gaining significant local media coverage.
