Ever since the government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto pushed through a political reform allowing independents to compete in electoral contests in Mexico there has been considerable speculation over whether the presidential elections in 2018 would see the emergence of a political maverick going solo. Jaime ‘El Bronco’ Rodríguez Calderón, the first independent candidate to win election in Mexico, becoming governor of the state of Nuevo León in October 2015, was viewed as the most likely figure to fill this role. Rodríguez may still run but he will not be the first independent to declare his intention to seek the presidency.
