VENEZUELA: Opposition back and forth over strategy

Following its best-ever electoral performance in the December 2015 mid-term legislative elections, 2016 was a year of defeat for Venezuela’s main opposition coalition, Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD). Its newly-won legislative control was neutralised by the supreme court (TSJ), which also sanctioned sweeping decree powers for the president that allowed him to bypass congress altogether, while the national electoral court (CNE) scuppered the MUD’s efforts to hold a referendum to recall President Nicolás Maduro.
