The campaign led by factions of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana- Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) promoting the introduction of changes to Paraguay’s national constitution to allow presidential re-election so that President Horacio Cartes can seek a second term in 2018 continues to produce high political tensions. The signature collection drive for a petition in favour of re-election promoted by the Cartistas has met with strong backlash from the political opposition as well as the general public after it was discovered the civil servants were being forced to sign the petition while the signatures of other individuals were apparently forged.
