In a major new twist ahead of next February’s presidential elections, a group known as ‘Rafael Contigo Siempre’ has presented 1.2m signatures to Ecuador’s national electoral council (CNE) to call for a referendum to be held on whether President Rafael Correa should be able to seek re-election after all. Correa tweeted his appreciation for the support but maintained that he had taken a decision and owed a debt to his family.
