Morales on the defensive over the economy

On 8 August, Bolivia’s national independence day, President Evo Morales was compelled to reiterate that Bolivia is not in “economic crisis”, despite the drop in international hydrocarbon prices and the worst drought to hit the country in a quarter of a century. The remarks by Morales – who, in a further indication of confidence, ratified his entire cabinet in their posts – come as the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government is facing renewed unrest from the national confederation of mining cooperatives (Fencomin), which is calling for a ten-point list of demands to be addressed.
