Gender violence concerns persist
A report released late last year by the United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Eclac) has once again warned about the high levels of gender violence in the region. With at least 1,678 women murdered in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2014, the prevalence of ‘femicide’ is particularly marked in the Central America and Caribbean sub-region due to factors like prevalent organised crime, human trafficking, and historic discrimination against women.
