US. The US embassy in Mexico City announced on 12 April that it was shutting its consulate in Nuevo Laredo, “until further notice." In fact, the consulate reopened on 13 April. The consulate was attacked with a grenade, (which local police initially and erroneously claimed was a home-made bomb) on 9 April. The US also issued another warning to US citizens to avoid “unnecessary trips to parts of the states of Durango, Coahuila and Chihuahua." Nuevo Laredo is in another border state, Tamaulipas. The US is also sending home the families of US government employees working in the consulates in Tijuana, Nogales, Ciudad Juárez, Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey and Matamoros. The US (perhaps unwittingly) underlined how localised the violence is in Mexico by publicising a visit by Michelle Obama, the First Lady, to Mexico City on 14 and 15 April.
