Between mid-December and early January media across the region began to allude to a new study highlighting the fact that Latin America and the Caribbean have, as a region, the highest homicide rates in the world. Figures from the study have continued to appear in subsequent media reports as points of reference to gauge the evolution of crime rates in the past year. The study was indeed new (its focus was violence prevention worldwide) but the content, particularly with regard to homicide data, was not.
