SECURITY | Intervening in prison service. On 28 July the Honduran government led by President Juan Orlando Hernández announced the dismissal of the head of the prison service, Santos Simeón Flores, and his replacement by Col. Francisco Gálvez Granados. A presidential press release did not give reasons for the move but it is believed to be linked to the escape of 13 prisoners from the maximum security prison, Tamara, since 19 June – five on that date and eight more on 22 July. As well as appointing Gálvez, Hernández named Col. Kennet Odbulio Sabillón as the new deputy director and Col. Orlando Francisco Maradiaga as the new prison inspector. In addition to the new appointments, Hernández also announced that other measures would be taken like increasing the use of technology in the country’s 24 prisons as well as the deployment of the military to reinforce security, although further details have yet to be provided.
