ARGENTINA: Supreme Court orders action on drugs

On 12 November Argentina’s Supreme Court ordered the national government to take “urgent measures” to intensify the fight against drug-trafficking gangs operating in the northern provinces of Jujuy, Salta and Tucumán. The court's unusual intervention, released in a press statement, was signed by all seven members of Argentina's highest judicial authority. Both government and opposition politicians have been expressing their concern about the extent of drug-related violence in the north of the country since the Argentine Episcopal Conference released a statement at the beginning of November calling for greater political effort in the “drama of drugs and drug-trafficking”.
