PERU: Lull as government moves against SL supporters

The government has again extended the state of emergency across much of the Apurímac-Ene-Mantaro valleys region (Vraem), as a purported deserter from the guerrillas claims that Sendero Luminoso (SL) has 100 ‘bases’ in that region. The guerrillas have been keeping a low profile; government forces have been conducting sweeps to arrest members of their support networks.
