Prison tragedies

This month a prison riot in Venezuela’s Yare penitentiary in Sabaneta left 16 people dead. It came weeks after 35 people were killed and 63 injured in a prison riot in Bolivia’s largest jail, Palmasola – the deadliest in Bolivia’s history. Both tragedies again highlight the need to address the parlous state of prisons in the region.
