The electoral watchdog, Ética y Transparencia (EyT) this week
released its final report on the 9 November municipal elections, showing that
fraud took place in at least 40 of the 146 municipalities in which contests were
held. The report's publication piles pressure on President Daniel Ortega: the
opposition is planning fresh protests, and international donors are increasingly
unlikely to restore funding, suspended in light of transparency concerns.
Meanwhile the credibility of the supreme electoral court (TSE), already
questioned over its role in the elections, was further eroded by an appeal filed
