With Brazil’s military police (PM) under close scrutiny in the wake of their aggressive handling of June’s protests, the head of the PM in Rio de Janeiro has been sacked. Col. Erir Ribeiro Costa Filho was dismissed by Rio’s powerful state security chief, José Mariano Beltrame, after he ordered an amnesty for police officers who committed undefined “administrative” misdemeanours, arguing that their suspensions were causing a staffing crisis.
