TRADE & DIPLOMACY: Shifting sands post Chávez
At the end of last month, Venezuela’s new president, Nicolás Maduro, paid his first official visit to Bolivia, where he met his counterpart Evo Morales, a close ally of Maduro’s predecessor, the late Hugo Chávez (1999-2013). The two men lauded bilateral cooperation, announcing plans for two binational companies – one for food security and the other, textiles. Maduro’s visit took place against a backdrop of growing cooperation between Bolivia and China, which recently overtook Venezuela as Bolivia’s main creditor.
