Caribbean starts seeing evidence of the balloon effect

In recent months, there appears to have been a significant increase in drug-trafficking activity in the Caribbean basin area, with local authorities reporting an unusual number of drug busts. Attributed to the so-called “balloon effect” due to efforts in Mexico and Central America to crack down on drug trafficking, the US has raised concerns that international criminal organisations are again reverting to the route which was used previously in the 1980s.
