Las Crucitas mine unearths more problems in Costa Rica

The open-pit gold mine of Las Crucitas, which is owned by Canada’s Infinito Gold, is again proving contentious for the Partido de Liberación Nacional (PLN) government of President Laura Chinchilla. While in November 2010 a court ordered the mine to cease operations citing environmental concerns, ending two years of controversy, this month the Canadian company announced plans to sue Costa Rica for more than US$1bn if operations are not permitted to resume.
