CUBA: The significance of Mariel

The mega-project for the development of Cuba’s port of Mariel, on the north coast 40km west of Havana, is a key element of the Cuban government’s strategy for overhauling the economic system. It represents a pivotal element in the process of reforming economic management, reshaping the Havana area, transforming the structure of production, and initiating a new phase in the diversification of international economic relations.
