As was widely expected, Grenada’s 19 February general election led to a landslide victory for the New National Party (NNP), which won all 15 seats on offer against the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC). Dr Keith Mitchell has duly replaced Tillman Thomas as prime minister. Thomas served just one term, and he blamed his political demise on the bad luck of his mandate coinciding with the continuing aftermath of Hurricanes Ivan and Emily and the effects of the global financial crisis that began in 2008, the same year as he won office. That Mitchell’s inheritance will, itself, by no means be an easy one was underlined by the fact that, after less than a month in power, the NNP government announced a default on some government bonds.
