CUBA: Cuba mourns its “best friend ever”

With the early death at the age of 58 of Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez on 5 March Cuba lost “the greatest friend it ever had throughout its history” wrote Fidel Castro on 11 March. The fact that the former president and Chávez’s closest mentor took almost a week to say something in public was perhaps indicative of the great personal loss felt by the elder Castro, who at 86 continues to defy his great age and his obvious physical frailty with a remarkably lucid mind.
