Migration reform enters into force. The government’s much-trumpeted migration reform took effect on 14 January, three months after it announced the most comprehensive shake-up of the system since tight restrictions were imposed in 1961. Cubans no longer require costly exit permits to travel or letters of invitation from a resident in a destination country. They only need a valid passport and a visa from the destination country. Cubans can also stay abroad now for 24 months (double the previous limit) without being stripped of residency, property and other rights.
