For the first time in six years, Bolivia is once again able to export liquefied natural gas (LNG). At the end of November Carlos Villegas, the president of Bolivia’s state oil company, Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), announced that Bolivia would begin to export 1,000 metric tonnes (MT)/month of LNG to Paraguay in December. Hailing the announcement as evidence that successful government management of the gas sector, which it re-nationalised in 2006, President Morales attributed the increase in LNG production to investment in key refineries including Guillermo Elder Bell (in Santa Cruz) and Gualberto Villarroel (Cochabamba). The president noted that two new separating plants — Rio Grande in Santa Cruz and Gran Chaco in Tarija — will allow Bolivia to boost its total LNG exports to 6,000MT/mth in 2013 and 42,000MT/mth in 2014.
