Senate approves anti-money laundering bill. On 11 October Mexico’s senate approved an anti-money laundering bill presented by President Felipe Calderón, which has been stuck in congress for two years. Among other things, the bill calls for the establishment of a specialised money laundering investigation unit that will form part of the attorney general organised crime investigation unit (Siedo). The bill, which has already been approved by the chamber of deputies, has now been submitted to the President who is expected to sanction it in the coming days. The president of the senate commission in charge of analysing the bill, Cristina Díaz, said that the new law will help Mexico in its international commitments to fighting organised crime, which is estimated to launder some US$40bn a year in Mexico.
