In Brief - Cuba

CUBA | Havana denies fresh rumours about Fidel.  Fidel Castro’s son Alex Castro has denied fresh rumours about the death of his father and former president (1959-2008).  Social networks were abuzz with speculation this week after Fidel failed to (publically) congratulate his protégé, Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez, on his sweeping re-election victory on 7 October. Fidel, who turned 86 in August, has not been seen or heard from in several months, with ever longer intervals between his printed ‘Reflections’. Alex Castro said his father was “well, doing his daily things, reading, doing his exercises”.  Fidel’s death has been rumoured on numerous occasions since he first took ill in July 2006. He formally handed over power to his younger brother Raúl in February 2008. President Chávez has credited Fidel not only with spotting that he was unwell but also with keeping his spirits up during his recent year-long battle with cancer, for which he received treatment in Havana.
