Implausible as it may sound former president Alvaro Uribe (2002-2010) has taken a leaf out of Juan Domingo Perón’s book. In 1973 the most influential political leader in Argentine history, banned from taking part in that year’s presidential election, promoted the presidency of a close collaborator under the slogan “Cámpora to government, Perón to power”. Last week, Uribe launched a political movement intended to challenge the (expected) re-election bid of President Juan Manuel Santos in 2014. Uribe’s former presidential adviser, José Obdulio Gaviria, said: “whoever [the presidential candidate] is will have to be mindful of his limitations and accept the direction and orientation of president Uribe, which is what Santos didn’t do”. In other words: “Someone to government, Uribe to power”.
