Last week saw the start of the second national march from the eastern opposition region of Beni to La Paz, more than 500km away, by indigenous protesters opposed to President Evo Morales’s proposal to build a road through the local indigenous territory and national park, Isiboro Sécure (Tipnis). Protesters are no doubt hoping for a repeat of last year, when a similar march created a major political crisis for the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government forcing it to backtrack over the plan [WR-11-43]. However, doubts have emerged not only regarding the prospects of the current march but also over the future of what has been one of the most controversial infrastructure projects of the MAS government.
