UN confirms Minustah’s withdrawal

The scandal involving the Uruguayan marines serving in the UN Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (Minustah), accused of sexually assaulting a Haitian man [WR-11-36], appears to have been the final straw. This week UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon held a meeting with Haiti’s president, Michel Martelly, in which he not only said that he would recommend the reduction of the military component of the peace-keeping mission to levels prior to the January 2010 earthquake (from the current 12,200 to 9,000), but that he would also support Minustah’s eventual exit from the country.
