“A message to the Catholic Church” is how one civil society group, the youth Resistencia Juvenil por la Dignidad Nacional (Rejudin), is portraying the murder of Fr Marlon Ernesto Pupiro García, a priest from the western province of Masaya, who had reportedly criticised President Daniel Ortega’s dubious re-election bid. While stopping short of similarly pointing the finger at the government, the Archdiocese of Managua has expressed dissatisfaction with the official investigation and is demanding justice in relation to the case. This has once again brought to the fore renewed tension in Church-State relations ahead of the 6 November vote.
