VENEZUELA: The Unified Ticket

The main opposition coalition, Mesa de la Unión Democrática (MUD), has announced a ‘unity ticket’ (or a single ballot card) for the 2012 presidential elections, in an effort to boost support for its planned 'unity candidate', who will be selected in scheduled primaries in early 2012. President Hugo Chávez reacted scathingly, calling it a ruse to disguise infighting in the MUD. This criticism is not without foundation, amid intense jockeying for position in the MUD ahead of next year’s municipal and presidential contests. However, the strong official reaction to the announcement also indicates that the government sees the threat.
