POLITICS & SECURITY: The ghost of violence past

The numbers speak for themselves and the message for President Juan Manuel Santos is not a positive one. Although the government has made the restitution of land to people forcefully (and illegally) displaced by Colombia's internal conflict a policy priority, it has inadvertently increased the risk for the local advocates of displaced victims. In the eight years of the Alvaro Uribe (2002-2010) administration, 35 activists calling for the restitution of land were murdered; in the first 10 months of President Santos's administration, 11 have been killed.
